Modular Geiger-Müller Radiation Detection Board (Modbus over USB & RS485)
The GM Counter Module is a compact, fully configurable Geiger-Müller tube interface designed for integration into radiation monitoring systems.
It integrates a programmable high-voltage supply, pulse counting engine, dose calculation logic and a unified Modbus communication interface in a single 5V-powered board.
The same Modbus register map is available via:
- USB 2.0 (microUSB, virtual COM / CDC)
- RS485 (Modbus RTU, non-isolated)
This ensures seamless transition between laboratory configuration and industrial deployment without firmware changes.

Unified Communication Architecture
The module exposes a single Modbus register space.
Whether connected via:
- USB (virtual COM port),
- RS485 bus,
the command structure and register mapping remain identical.
This simplifies:
- firmware integration,
- system validation,
- migration from development setups (USB) to field systems (RS485),
- remote configuration and diagnostics.
No vendor-specific protocol.
No separate USB command layer.
High-Voltage Section
Integrated HV converter includes:
- 50–650 V programmable output
- Configurable PWM frequency (10–500 kHz)
- Configurable maximum duty cycle
- PID regulator (adjustable P and I gains)
- ADC-based voltage feedback
- Ripple estimation (1-second window)
- Hardware fault monitoring (overload / thermal)
All parameters accessible and stored via Modbus.
Runtime Data (Modbus Input Registers)
Available parameters include:
- Total pulse counter
- Pulses per second (CPS)
- Dose rate [mSv/h]
- Accumulated dose [mSv]
- Measured HV voltage
- HV ripple estimation
- PWM duty cycle
- 5V supply voltage
- CPU and board temperature
- Modbus communication statistics
- HV fault status
Calibration Engine
Two polynomial regions with configurable switching threshold.
Each region supports:
- Quadratic (a2)
- Linear (a1)
- Offset (a0)
- Exponent scaling
Allows adaptation to different GM tubes without firmware modification.
